Snowmageddon

In February, Seattle had the most snow it has seen in over a decade. Several inches of snow buried the city, causing a shutdown of Seattle schools for two days in one week and three in the next. Five days were added to the end of the school year. The snow was so bad, Gov. Jay Inslee declared a state of emergency for the Pacific Northwest.

New Nest for the Eagles

Although it took several delays and nearly seven years to build, Cleveland finally has a practice field to call its own. The school celebrated its opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in early May. Instead of busing to use other schools’ facilities, the Eagles are now able to walk the short distance down Lucile Street to the playfield. The area includes a three-lane track, batting cages and storage. The field is regulation size for soccer, but not for football games.

Softball & Girls Frisbee

make history

Girls Softball and Girls Ultimate Frisbee both finished the spring sports season with historic records. The softball team made it all the way to the first round of district playoffs before losing 3-1 against Juanita. Head Coach Rebecca Williams Leach was named Metro League Coach of the Year while pitcher Molly House made the All-Metro 1st Team.

Girls Ultimate made it to state semifinals but fell 12-9 to Roosevelt. This was the first time both teams advanced farther than Metro League playoffs in postseason.

Bulldog buzzer beater

Playing in front of a packed crowd for their Metro League opener on Nov. 30, the Eagles led Garfield for most of the game. The Bulldogs took the lead before the half, but Cleveland would not stay down for long. A three pointer by senior Calvin Law Jr. sent the game into overtime, but it was junior Anthony Thompson who shot and made a half court buzzer beater in overtime. It was the first time the Eagles have beaten the Bulldogs since the early 1960s.

Bubblin’ Brown Champs x 2

The Cleveland dance team held their winning title at the annual Bubblin’ Brown Dance Competition held at Garfield. The team opened their routine with a powerful number to Childish Gambino’s “This is America,” and built momentum as they danced their way to another win.
